I love food. Many think I’m uptight about food since I’m a dietitian, but hey-I’m human, too!
I had the best intentions to spend my Saturday doing things to prepare for my trip to California. As excited as I am and how much I bring it up, I forget about it! Therefore, nothing ever gets done. No packing, no laundry, no itinerary printed out, etc. Today I have to do everything. I don’t feel bad about why nothing was accomplished last night though.
Last night my muchacho went into Chicago for something beer related and then his brother worked which freed up me and boy’s brother’s girlfriend (did you follow that?). The two of us get along so well. We’re two outgoing, career driven blondes. We decided to go to a dinner and movie.
We went to Social because the food is phenomenal and we wanted a brilliant drink. Boy and I go in there so much that the all of the staff knows us and knows what we always will start out with. The background on this restaurant is a small plate style with an emphasis on local (as best as possible) and fresh food. The menu has its staples but as well as frequent specials. The seating consists of the bar and 4 large tables. You sit among other patrons (hence the name Social). A huge perk of the seating is that you get to see everyone else’s food (and drool over it)!
We started with a blueberry mojito with a blackberry foam! YUM!!
Being with a Wisconsin native, ordering the cheese curds to start with was a must. The cheese is made from the cows milk from the next city over and is topped with chili lime salt. They literally melt in your mouth!
And fresh-baked bread was brought out with the curds. Perfectly soft bread with room temp butter.
For my entrée I order the arugula & egg salad. My parents raised me to have table manners but after the first time that I had this salad, I had to use all of my willpower not to pick up the plate and lick it clean. It consists of arugula, bacon, balsamic vinegar, and a farm fresh egg (folks, nothing trumps a farm fresh egg). I used the remaining bread to soak up the balsamic vinegar.
While talking with our waitress/hostess we were distracted by the dessert brought to our table mates. We heard “bruleed marshmallows.” We immediately told her that we needed one of those! It was a deconstructed s’mores of Mexican chocolate, a pistachio nut butter, pound cake and house made, bruleed marshmallows.
Our minds were blown. The pistachio nut butter (which had a hint of honey) was absolutely brilliant! We begged them to put this on the menu since it was a night special.
After consuming our amazing food we then made friends with our table mates. We talked with them for at least 20 minutes about food/science/health. They found talking to two 20-somethings who are so passionate about their career subjects to be refreshing (not to sound arrogant) and we also encouraged their son to keep up with his science in school (yes, we’re science nerds).
We then hightailed it to the movie theater to see Bridesmaids.
I rarely go to the movies anymore but this looked great and I was hearing good reviews for it. It was packed in our theater and well…I broke the ice with everyone. There was some horror preview going on-all was quite on the screen and then something popped out. I had a normal reaction. Every limb shot straight forward as I jumped out of my seat and screamed so loudly that my voice hurt the rest of the night. You better believe the entire theater was laughing for a few good minutes at me. I HATE horror movies. The actual movie was freaking hilarious though! The leading ladies had us bent over laughing almost the entire time! I recommend this movie to anyone and everyone.
This morning I reined in heart healthy food again. I can always count on breakfast to put me back on track.
I had overnight oats with lots o’ blueberries and of course coffee. As I grabbed my milk out of the fridge I realized how dumb I was for buying a gallon (which I typically buy 1/2 gallon) of skim milk days before leaving on vacation. I’m telling you, I cannot remember that I’m leaving for CA in 2 days. I’ve started a to do list which every type a personality loves.
Time to get my booty in gear. Hope your Sunday is relaxing!
